Description
Hello & Welcome,This listing is for a very old and quite rare antique hand painted heavy enameled moriage scalloped bowl.
This rare and unique piece is part of my private collection and has been in my family for at least 3 generations. It is an absolutely stunning piece.
The bowl measures at the widest part including the handle 11 inches. It is 2.5 inches high from bottom rim to top rim.
Circa late 1800's very early 1900's.
Hand painted scene is believed to be of Mt Fuji in Japan. The colors and the craftsmanship are hard to capture. This piece is a true work of art. The detail and enameled art work is some of the finest.
Scalloped edge with open work handle.
I had this piece appraised back in 2004 and at that time it appraised at 625.00. That was taking into consideration the repaired area. This piece was repaired in the 1940's.
I am told this is quite a rare piece however I am no expert at Asian antique artwork so I will let the buyer make that determination. I will say in all my years (50+) of being an avid collector of antiques I have never seen another one like this one.
It is in very good antique condition. However over the 110 plus years of lifetime it was chipped and professionally repaired. Please see pictures where I have noted the area.
Just a small area and very, very well repaired. In fact when you look at it from the front it is unnoticeable. It is only when you turn it over to the back side you can see where the porcelain repaired area is slightly different in color. The moriage was repaired as well and it is just a shade different in color but again you have to look extremely close to fine this. I know it is there, it has been for as long as I can remember. My Grandmother said it was damage when it got bumped while moving it from one cabinet to another when they were having some remodeling done in the 1940's.
Most of the pieces I have listed were displayed in a Victorian boarding home and were used only for decoration.
PLEASE BEAR IN MIND this piece is NOT NEW. It was manufactured somewhere between 1870 and 1909. It is well over 100 years old.
It shows signs of age....just like we as humans do.
If you are expecting something PERFECT and NEW...then antiques in my opinion are simply not for you.
If you like things with character, items that were hand crafted and not mass produced then you would appreciate and enjoy antique pieces.
This bowl is a heavy piece and of very high quality. You simply don't find workmanship like this in todays mass produced world.
I took as many photos as possible and noted where the bowl has been repaired in the pictures. The enamel work is very detailed and intricate. Pictures simply do not do it justice. However I supplied several close up photos of the enamel work so you can see as well as several of the hand painted area.
The hand painted scene of Mt. Fuji with the birds flying, the so-an (Japanese term for a tiny grass hut) and landscape is beautifully detailed and very well executed. It is clearly apparent this was done by a talented artist.
This piece comes from a smoke free environment.
I do not have room to display many of the hundreds of pieces my family collected over 3 generations. I am slowly sorting through the many steamer trunks full of antiques we have and listing those which I do not plan on keeping.
I have priced this wonderful bowl with the repair taken into consideration.
As I said earlier I had it apprised back in 2004. It appraised back then for nearly twice the amount I am now asking for it.
